Balenciaga Sunset Paris T-Shirt—A Retro Experience with an Oil Painting Texture

I’ve had that Balenciaga “Sunset Paris” T-shirt saved on Pinterest for ages. That oil painting texture is absolutely stunning. As for the price of the authentic version, it’s over 500 euros on the European official website—and with shipping costs, it’s just outrageous. In early March, I spotted a replica on Litbuy for less than a tenth of the authentic price, so I snapped it up without hesitation.

First, let’s talk about the printing. The authentic version uses digital direct-to-garment printing, which gives it a particularly delicate, oil-painting-like grain. The higher-end replica is also digitally printed, and it does a good job of recreating that grainy texture. The lower-end version uses traditional offset printing; it feels smooth to the touch but lacks that authentic vibe. The one I bought is probably the higher-end version—it has that grainy texture, though it’s a bit coarser than the genuine article. One thing to note: the higher-end version’s quality control images appear matte, while the lower-end version looks relatively glossy.

In terms of color gradation, the genuine version features exceptionally natural transitions between warm and cool tones, resembling a real oil painting. The replica’s color transitions appear slightly stiff, while lower-quality versions look like cheap photos with filters applied, with colors that are noticeably off.

Fabric weight: The authentic version is made of heavyweight cotton, with a weight of over 300g. The replica is slightly lighter, at around 250g. In terms of drape, the authentic version hangs very naturally, while the replica’s drape is slightly inferior and feels a bit puffy.

As for the distressed details on the collar, the authentic version looks very casual, like natural wear and tear. The replica’s distressing looks a bit forced, as if it were cut with scissors. The same goes for the cuffs—the authentic version has a more natural distressed look.

To be honest, the quality of this T-shirt’s replicas varies by version. The higher-end versions have decent fabric and prints, but the lower-end ones are much worse. I recommend going for the higher-end version—it doesn’t cost much more, but the quality is significantly better.

I’ve worn it once already, and my friends even asked if I bought it in Europe. I told them yes, it’s Balenciaga, and they actually believed me. Haha, the money I saved could’ve bought me a plane ticket.

I’ve washed it once, and it didn’t shrink much—the print didn’t crack either. For the price, it’s a good deal. I plan to pick up another one with a different design this summer so I can rotate them.

Oh, and as for styling, this T-shirt pairs well with black pants or jeans. That laid-back, painterly vibe really comes through when you pair it with simple bottoms.
